Week 22 (May 25th-31st): Small Town Life

Posted on

We live in a small town. I think it’s actually considered a village. Our main street has so few restaurants and shops that I could actually list them all for you (but I won’t!) . It’s not much, especially compared to many of the other towns around here. Blink and it’s gone. So when our beloved “bagel shop” closed, the kids were depressed. I’m only joking a little bit on that. But a few weeks later “the eatery” opened up. It pretty much looks like the bagel shop, but has fancier sandwiches. And ice cream.

So when my grandmother sent the kids a few dollars in the mail, Caroline immediately thought we should try out the new eatery. She opted for TWO scoops of Oreo ice cream. She made a real nice decent in it. Liam couldn’t decide what he wanted. He picked a black & white cookie, ate half of it and then immediately regretted his choice. Can’t say we were surprised by this!

Our town might be little, there might not be a lot to do on main street on a Friday night (well, we do have a “pub” in town, but we now drink our beer in the comfort of our home), but we like it here.

Two scoops please. The two dollars from Great Nana didn't quiet cover her ice cream tab.

Week 21 (May 18th-May 24th): Worms

Posted on

Caroline made a worm habitat in Daisy’s. A month ago. It some how became my responsibility to keep them moist (gasp–I’ve used the most hated word in America!) and fed. They usually sit in their container on top of the bookshelf. But every so often I do the good mom thing and pull them down for the kids to take charge of. So on this day, their little buddy was visiting and he thought it was just so cool that we keep worms in our house.

My sweet little daughter has put a hit on nearly every bug she has even laid eyes on. But on this day she decided she was going to be braver than the boys and hold one in her hand. The little girl that made Jeff spray “bug spray” in her room every night before bed for nearly a year just matter-of-factly plucked a long pinkish-brown worm out of the container and pretty much shoved it in the boys faces. I’m certain I heard some good natured “EEK’s” and “Get ’em away from me” from the boys.

Girl’s rock.

Her exact words: It's just a worm. What's the big deal?

Week 20 (May 11th-17th): Mom’s Day

Posted on

We like low-key events around here. Mom’s Day included. Breakfast at the E.Q. fire house. Swimming lessons at the Y. Then a picnic lunch and exploring at the Brookhaven/Holtsville Ecology Center, complete with a visit to the ice cream truck. Home by 3 pm with a couple exhausted kids. What more could you want?

Week 19 (May 4th-10th): Hi Dad

Posted on

I just happened to find out that Jeff’s boat might be passing by at a certain time. So without telling the boy why, we went down to the rocks. The little guy was beyond shocked when he saw the boat and absolutely thrilled when the driver (I wonder who it could have been!) tooted the horn.

Hi Dad!

It is pure coincidence that Liam was wearing this shirt
