Week 1 (December 29th-January 4th): Art & Work

Posted on

One thing that Caroline wanted to do while on winter vacation from school was visit Jeff at work. She rarely gets a chance to stop by his office now that she in school all day. It was snowing and I didn’t exactly feel like being out and about (even the traditional trip to get a treat for the kids and coffee for Jeff wasn’t motivating me), but I bundled the kids up and brought them over for a short visit. Of course, it was worth the hassle. There’s just something fun about being able to visit your parents at work and I can still remember some of the visits to my dad when he was at work.

Caroline was more than excited to visit Jeff, but part of me wonders if she sees visiting his office like going to an art gallery. Jeff has a lot of drawings and paintings in his office and she likes to look at it all (80% hers, 20% Liam’s). She likes tell him that she remembers making a certain picture for him and asks him why he still has it up. He tells her it’s because she is the best artist he knows and her big smile gets just a bit bigger. Just take a look at those smiling mugs below to and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Yep, definitely worth a drive in the snow on a lazy afternoon to see those smiles!

For the record, Liam is working hard to increase his artwork stats. Yesterday he painted twelve pictures and designated that eight of them were for Jeff’s office! Guess he noticed he was under-represented on the desk!

2014!

Already two weeks behind–YIKES! So much for a resolution that I will post in a timely (aka weekly) manner. But here it is….a new 52 week project. Who knew I’d make it to year three?!?! Now I just have to make it through year three!

Week 52 (December 22nd-28th): Merry Christmas

Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given – when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes. ~Joan Winmill Brown

We had a very happy Christmas here. Our traditions for Christmas Eve continued. Homemade stromboli for dinner, new jammies and an ornament (or two!) then a drive around town to look at the Christmas lights. Liam was the first up on Christmas morning (no big surprise there!) at 5 am, but we managed to put him back to bed for another half hour before they both were begging to see if Santa had come. Presents were opened in waves with the kids having plenty of time to play with their new toys, and plenty of hot coffee and coffee cake (my mom’s recipe) for Jeff and me. Jeff started a fire in the afternoon, we all vegged with Christmas movies and someone even took a nap (I confess–it was me!). Phone calls were made to the grandparents and dinner was an easy turkey and ham sampler (thanks Harry & David) and homemade (spelt) dinner rolls. After dinner, there was one more gift to open (Thanks Granny! We love this tradition!) and yummy carrot cake. Yes, it was a Merry Christmas indeed.

Week 51 (December 15th-21st): Snowy Morning

Posted on

Nothing makes waiting for the bus like a little snow! That’s right–we still go to school when it snows around here 🙂 Even though it is December and I knew it was going to snow, the boots were still in the basement. Opps. I did redeem my Mother of the Year status and tucked dry socks and an extra pair of shoes into Caroline’s backpack before she hopped on the bus.

After Big Sis was gone, Liam managed another 45 minutes of outside play (on top of the 20 minutes with had while “waiting” for the bus) before I forced him into the house for hot cocoa and dry clothes.

Week 50 (December 8th-14th): Must be Santa!

Disclaimer: These pictures are actually from two different weeks (12/8-14 & 12/15-21) because one child (who shall remain nameless) had a bit of un-love for Santa. That is until Santa showed up at the Coast Guard station. Then this child was SO HAPPY to pose with Santa. Go figure.

Week 49 (December 1st-7th): Christmas Card Out Takes

Posted on

I didn’t do a very good job mailing out our Christmas cards this year, so if you didn’t get one “Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Love the Smiths.”

Grabbing a nice picture of the kids together to grace the card proved to be a bit of a challenge. I was short on patience, they were short on smiles but put in a good effort after a bath and a change of parents. Yup, I left for work and they ended up hamming it up for Dad.

See if you can spot the photo that actually made it on to the card!
