Week 49 (December 9th – December 15th): Growing Up

Posted on

My little guy has been doing big boy things for a long time. Potty trained for over a year (minus nighttime). Out of the crib by 18 months. Talking in full blown sentences since I can’t remember when. So just when it seems that he has done it all, something else happens to remind us that he is still growing up.

This week Granny sent Liam Daddy’s old comforter and pillow cases. I’d being lying if I didn’t say he was disappointed at first that there were no fire trucks on them. He didn’t quite understand how someone could have a blanket with cars and trucks but not fire trucks. After talking it over with Dad, Liam is happy thinking that the cars on the comforter are being driven by fire fighters on their way to the station.

When I told Liam that I would put the new comforter on his bed, he insisted that he didn’t need the bed rails anymore. Needless to say I was a bit hesitant. It was just last week that I went to check on him in bed and found him with his feet on the pillow. The boy moves a lot when he sleeps. His bed, which was also his Dad’s, is a long way off the floor. Even his fall when we were at Nana & Grampy’s house in Maine, Liam took a midnight tumble out of the bed. But his stubborn bone won out. We would try no rails.

He has made it three nights without a problem. I’ve woken up each night with the need to check on him and make sure he isn’t dangerously close to the edge. He’s been fine each night. Looks like he’s got this big boy bed thing covered.

In addition to no rails, Liam has taken to reading himself to sleep each night. He loves having his little angel light on and a big pile books beside him when he snuggles in

Week 48 (December 2nd – December 8th): Let’s Build a Gingerbread House

Posted on

When we were preparing to leave Maryland for New York I worried that we wouldn’t have enough things to do with the kids. Living on a huge Navy base offered so many family oriented things to do that I was certain it couldn’t be matched elsewhere. So far, I have been impressed with our little community. Some weekends we have TOO MANY things to do and actually have to say no to some activities.

Here’s one that we are glad we didn’t miss: Making gingerbread houses at the local library. The kids had so much fun and I was so happy I didn’t have to buy all the supplies (candy!) or do any clean up besides tossing away our used napkins and plastic silverware.

Although the kids know that the gingerbread houses are just for decoration, I can’t help but notice that the homes seem to be missing a few pieces of rooftop candy. I wonder how long they will last before the little nibblers decide to let them be!

Week 47 (November 25th-December 1st): Ho Ho Ho

I think I need to start my New Years Resolution early: Post on this blog earlier in the week! Can’t believe it’s already Saturday and I haven’t done it already!

Now on to the topic at hand! After many attempts to get here, Granny finally made it to Long Island. It was an extra special treat because we haven’t celebrated Christmas with her before and even though Christmas is still weeks away, our house (and our children) are ready for some yuletide cheer!

Week 46 (November 18th-24th): Happy Thanksgiving

Posted on

With Thanksgiving this past week, I recognize that I sure do have a lot to be thankful.

I am thankful for all the obvious things. My husband & children. That my family is healthy and happy (most of the time!). That we have family that loves us. Enough money for a random stop at Starbucks. The list is quite endless.

There are so many seemingly small things that really are big things. One of those things has been captured in this picture. I am truly thankful that my children love books. If I say “Go read a book,” they will gladly comply 99% of the time. They can sit and listen to Jeff or me read stories to them for HOURS. And Caroline has begun to “read” stories to Liam. I am thankful they already have a love of books and hope it stays with them for all their days.
